Red is the New Black: How to Stand Out at a Funeral

This past week I had to attend the funeral of a dear friend of mine. It was a hard loss for me and the days leading up to the service found me in a dark place. I spent most of the time alone, reflecting.

See, death- for me- always brings up a myriad of questions. Like, what does it meant to be alive? What defines a life well lived? And, most importantly, what does one wear to the funeral?

Like most women, I think every outing is an opportunity to show off what the good lord gave me. And I am a firm believer that no event or place is an exception.

Now I find a lot of people are hesitant to ‘flaunt it’ at services for the recently deceased, seeing as it is usually quite a somber affair. But don’t let something like death get in the way of your life! Here is the perfect guide on what to wear to your next funeral.

Power Colors

Power colors are in and 2017 is all about red. Red nail polish, red dresses, red shoes, redrum, you name it!

Bold Patterns

Whoever said plaid on plaid is tacky has obviously never seen my go to funeral pantsuit.

Show Some Skin

Take people’s minds off the depressing aspect of a funeral by giving them something to look at!

Opposites Attract: White

Most people think wedding when they think of white- and I think that’s part of the beauty of wearing white to a funeral. The contrasts play really well together (plus white goes well with all seasons).

Florals

A flower print is truly an all around favorite when it comes to clothing. I find florals can be both bold and delicate at the same time- which is, unsurprisingly, exactly how I like my men.

Hmmm if I’m attending my own funeral can I still wear one of these or do I have to wear black?

Phyllis, I’m hoping to find a floral mumu for my recently deceased husband’s funeral this weekend. We were never close, so no sympathy cards please. Would you recommend red or purple lipstick? Now that I’m single I definitely need to impress.

Great question, I would definitely say purple- it SCREAMS single and ready to mingle. Have fun at the funeral, hope you meet a cute man!
