Impress Your Guests: Star-Studded Place Cards

I’ll be completely honest here, I find my sister’s boyfriend (C) a little weird and dark… He has a strange obsession with Venetian masks and often will spend entire meals staring at the ceiling without eating or saying a word. My sister find all of these things cute and quirky- she often refers to him as her masculine Zooey Deschanel. I just don’t see it.

Needless to say this past weekend, when my sister invited me and A over for a double date dinner, I was a little hesitant about spending another evening across from C (who, by the way, wins the Nosferatu lookalike contest in Albuquerque every year). And when A said he couldn’t go (his wife got them tickets to the LA Phil) I was about ready to find an excuse to stay home that night.

I was about ready to text Prim that I had been in a fatal collision and wouldn’t be able to make it… when something stopped me. This wasn’t me. I wasn’t the type of girl to avoid a social situation merely because one guest happened to smell like a musty closet and often liked to carry a mace. I was (and, obviously, am) the life of the party. I was going to go. And I was going to have fun.

And I did!

Sort of!

I mean the night was mostly really uncomfortable. C showed up with a quart sized ziplock full of raw meat and said he was going to make us family recipe- but then he disappeared into the kitchen for three hours and when he finally came out again he was empty handed and acted like he didn’t know who we were. Primrose literally thought this was the cutest thing ever and couldn’t stop giggling.

BUT the good part of the night was when Prim told me about her newest hosting technique that I am going CRAZY over. We both agreed it was totally Des Geulasse worthy and decided we had to make a post about it ASAP. It’s called Start-Studded Place Cards, and it is brilliant!

Have you ever been to a party where the host has name cards on the plates so you know where your sitting? It’s sooo cute, right? Well have you ever a been to a party where one of those name cards happens to say a famous person’s name?? You freak out, right?? It’s amazing to have guests who get excited about being at the party, so Star-Studded Place Cards is the perfect way to get the conversation going and have the feast last all night.

All you do is add a few extra place settings to your table. Then, when you’re writing the name cards, create a few extra for your favorite celebrities (like Oprah, Bono and Elmo). When you’re done, casually place those name cards at a place setting so that when your guests arrive they immediately see that you know famous people. As the night goes on you can either 1. never bring up that you know famous people and therefore never explain why they couldn’t make it (the ‘no big deal’ strategy is one of my faves- so LA) or 2. Answer a mysterious call halfway through dinner and exclaim loudly so all your guests can hear “Oh, Madonna (or any famous person’s name) I’m so bummed you can’t make it! Well we have to have coffee again soon sometime, my treat. Kisses!”

Great video, it reminds me of work I used to create back when I was young. The year was 1927 and I was the first filmmaker from Wisconsin to apply to Sundance. Since it didn’t exist yet I didn’t get accepted, but I’m still proud for trying.

Sooo cute! If I were picking celebrities to eat with, I would choose Roman Polanski, Ashlee Simpson, and Brian Williams. I’d definitely make these place cards. P.S. I was actually just standing outside C’s house earlier! I can’t believe he left his personal info online, lol! One step closer to meeting the one and only Phyllis is how I see it. I can confirm, the Venetian masks are terrifying
